Update 07/07/2010 : All non working ping services and duplicates are removed. This is the best wordpress ping list you can find anywhere.
WordPress Ping utility is a great source of traffic. Whenever you publish a new post at your blog it get pinged so that search engine, crawlers and bot get to know something new had been posted at your blog. Sound good but you have to use properly otherwise you get banned form this services soon.
To find out who you are pinging now, just go to your admin (wp-admin) area and, under “Settings” find “Writing Settings.” At the bottom of that page you will see “Update Services” and a short list of default places you are pinging when you post to your blog.
You are suppose to ping each of your blog post just once. Whenever you edit/update your post get pinged again. Those services don’t like multipinging of your article and if not stopped your blog get banned.
So here I will help you to not get banned and teach to how to use it properly.
You need two wordpress plugins for this:
1. cbnet Ping Optimizer
After you install cbnet Ping Optimizer:
- When you create a new post, your blog will ping and notify all the ping services that it has been updated. This encourages search engines and different blog directories/services to index your updated blog properly.
- When you edit an existing post, it won’t send any unnecessary ping to ping services and saves your blog from getting banned by such services.
- When you post a future post by editing the time stamp, it will ping only when your post appears in future. It won’t unnecessarily ping many times when you schedule posts as WordPress does by default.
2. Ping List Checker
The Ping List Checker plugin for WordPress allows blog owners to verify if whether all sites in their ping list are unique or not. If duplicate entries are found, the plugin will report them and will display the number of times they were found in the list. This will help WordPress blog owners to ensure that a ping service is not pinged more than once, and is also very helpful to eliminate double pings which could lead to you getting tagged as a spammer! Just added to version 1.1 has an ping list checker built in that reports if the ping URL connection is alive or dead. However, it requires that “Pear” be installed on your hosting server to work.
By using this two wordpress plugins your blog can use wordpress ping utility to max without getting banned.
The default ping list have just one ping service, here is my complete ping list with tons services I am using at my blogs.

how come http://rpc.pingomatic.com/ , which is the default WordPress setting isn’t included ?
I had included all services of pingomatic.com and as I said don’t ping the same url twice else you have chances of getting banned. Hope this clear your doubt.

Does one have to remove the duplicates from this ping list manually? I ask because I uploaded it in the appropriate place and then used the Ping Checker plugin to verify the servers, but A) most of them were listed as “Down” and B) there were hundreds of duplicates (up to 264 duplicates for one server in particular).

If Google instantly pick your link of your new blog post then what is the need to use more pinging services, will you explain?
Beside Google there are other content syndication website with search facility. Pinging them will get your content syndicated by them as soon as your publish your post. This will help you get backlinks from their website. If you know the basic of SEO then you must be knowing how important are backlinks.
Just an example of backlink: http://blogpingr.de/blog/40923-internet-geeks/ I got only because I am pinging my post @ http://blogpingr.de/ping/rpc2

My questions is when I checked to see if the ping list was alive…. every one came back marked as “Down” I even went in and checked the services wordpress.org suggests. They came back as “Down”. I can’t imagine every single site listed is inactive.

I had just tested Ping List Checker and found that it’s not working properly in WordPress 3.0. It’s show so many duplicates and fail to check the service is alive or not. I recommend not to use until it gets updated. I had contacted it’s author regarding this issue and waiting for his reply. Don’t worry most of them are alive and there are no duplicates.
The plugin is suppose to show you all duplicates that are found. You have to remove them manually.
I have the current version of WordPress on my blog and the plugin is working.
Check with your hosting provider that “Pear” is installed on hosting server. “Pear” is required for the ping checker function.

I checked with my hosting provider and PEAR is installed. I also removed all the duplicates (that feature works great) but when I check to see if the sites are alive every one comes back marked as “down”. I’m using the current version of WordPress 3.0.1.

Can I check installation info of PEAR from cpanel? Over 50% of the listed websites are marked as down.
Yes you can. Go to your Cpanel Home. Look for Software/Services box click on PHP Pears Packages. It should be there if your Host support Pears. Else contact your Hosting provider.

Try to add this services as soon as possible. They are no use after the posts had published.

This is very important information which I was totally unaware of, as I think many others may be also. It is a sad thing that honest people with integrity, can get banned or labeled as a spammer when they have absolutely no intentions of wrongdoing. ie. editing their posts to get them the way they want, and that resulting in multiple pings. This kind of stuff should be more readily available in my humble opinion.
