Difference Between Ethernet and Internet | Check Now!

Ethernet and Internet are two words thrown around in use when we talk about the world wide web. But, did you know that they are different words, and there’s a big difference between them? We have constantly seen people who think both are the same and those who even use the words interchangeably!

That’s why we decided to talk to you about Ethernet vs internet today.

What’s Common Between Them?

There’s just one thing common, and that’s why we thought we’d discuss that first. They are both network types. Both of them work towards connecting different computers.

What is the Difference Between Internet and Ethernet?

The Functionality

The Ethernet is a LAN or local area network, and the internet is a WAN or wide area network. Local area network means it connects systems that are present in close proximity to each other. Wide area network means it connects systems that may be present just about anywhere.Eternet network

So, in simpler words, if two computers are present in the same room, building, or location, we use the Ethernet. The range can be slightly increased with the use of technologies, but we don’t think Ethernet networks can go beyond 10 km range. If you think about it, though, even 10 km range is impractical. This is because LAN is wired connection and wires are generally only a few meters long.

Internet Network

When we want to connect computers that are far away – pretty much anywhere in the world, we use the Internet. We don’t need wires for this, and so, the possibilities are endless when it comes to transmitting information or services.

The Transmission Media

Transmission-Media

The Ethernet uses CSMA/CD (carrier sense multiple access with collision detection) methods with twisted pair and fiber transmission. The Internet does not have specific transmission media. It uses pretty much all the transmission media there are.

The Number of Networks

Now, here’s where things get interesting: Did you know that there are multiple Ethernet networks? There are thousands! However, when you think of the Internet, there’s just the one! So, besides the functionality and role, we must also think about this while discussing Internet vs Ethernet.

The Administrators

Ethernet is usually under the control of one or a few administrators while the Internet has no controllers. A few parts of the Internet may have administrators, but the Internet as a whole is without any control.

The Security

Ethernets are known to be much safer when compared to the Internet because Ethernet networks are closed. Outsiders cannot access the network until specifically allowed.

We can’t say the same about the Internet, can we? We have all been victims of malware, hacking, and viruses. That’s because the Internet is open and just about anyone can use it. Many misuse it as well, stealing information and causing a lot of harm. This is why numerous software programs such as anti-spyware, anti-virus, and anti-malware have come into the picture.

The Uses

One of the most common applications of Ethernet can be seen at offices. Printers, laptops, modems are connected with each other through Ethernet. The Internet, on the other hand, is used for emails, web pages, online music, online videos, et cetera.

When we talk about Ethernet vs Internet, it may seem very confusing in the beginning, but when we dig deeper, we understand that it is much simpler than we initially thought. Hopefully, this guide cleared up all your doubts!
